The Metropolitan Atlanta Youth Wind Ensemble

The Metropolitan Atlanta Youth Wind Ensemble (MAYWE) is a Conn-Selmer Youth Ensembles Affiliate Member. MAYWE is comprised of seventy-five of the most outstanding high school wind and percussion players from throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area. MAYWE 2 is a newly formed ensemble for 7th and 8th grade middle school students.

Under the direction of Mr. David W. Vandewalker, former Coordinator of Performing Arts in the Fulton County School district and Assistant Director of Bands at Georgia State University, repertoire is chosen from the most significant literature written for symphonic band and wind ensemble.  MAYWE students collaborate frequently with faculty artists from Georgia State University as well as members of professional orchestras in Atlanta.

MAYWE was established in 2003 to provide an outstanding wind band performance opportunity for talented young musicians in the greater Atlanta area. MAYWE draws many of the most talented musicians from over fifty schools and a dozen Georgia counties. The ensemble intends to serve as a supplement to the student’s school band program and requires that musicians be members of their own school band if one exists.

In 2004, the MAYWE Wind Ensemble was selected to perform at Carnegie Hall. Their May 2005 performance in the famed hall was nearly sold out and received a standing ovation. They performed a second time in May, 2009.
